Coronation Double Century~

The annual Coronation Double Century is the grand-daddy of endurance events in South Africa; a unique time trial that sees 250 teams of between six and 12 riders unite to ride the 202km route as fast as they can (or as happily as they can). Owned by the Pedal Power Association, the event is organised by The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust and the 2019 edition takes place in November, once again hosted by Swellendam.

The Coronation Double Century is more than just a bike race; it is a test of team spirit, sense of humour and camaraderie. Friendships are made, strengthened and sometimes broken, but never for long, as teams push on to meet the 16h30 Swellendam deadline, and the staggered cut-offs along the route.

Frequently asked questions

If you start your search early, and by early, I mean now, then yes, it is easy to rent a bike for the cycle tour. We can provide you with a high-quality Carbon Road Bike, but we have a limited number of each frame size, and so unless you are super tall or super short, you have to get in fast, before the other 5,000 internationals beat you to it.
It’s not cheap. In 2019, the average cost to rent a carbon road bike for the Cape Town Cycle Tour was R4,500 South African Rand (approximately £290 / €330/ $375). Why is it so expensive? Well, demand and supply play a role here, but most rental companies have a 7-day minimal rental over Argus Weekend, and so if you think you can rent a bike for a day or two, think again!
Our rentals include the bike itself, a helmet, a water bottles, a repair kit, flat pedals or we put on yours (you need to state this at the time of booking). We delivery to your hotel and pick up the bike after your race. We charge $25 to drop off and pick up the bikes after the race.
This should be clarified at the time of making your booking. We have 12 brand new high-quality Trek carbon road bikes, 2 high performance Trek Madone demo bikes and 4 aluminum Trek bikes for rent. Besides the Trek bikes we have several Specialized rentals. All bikes are very well maintained (we have our own workshop). You are welcome to ask us any questions about your rental, like, how old is the bike, what gearing does it have, and what spares and accessories (pedals, helmet, water bottle, inner tubes etc.) are included. If in doubt, we send you a photo of the bike we have allocated for you.
To confirm your reservation, you will need to leave a deposit (usually 50 per cent) or pay the total amount in full. You have the option to pay by credit card (Pay Pal) or by bank transfer and both options are completely safe.
We will ask you to sign a form when collecting the bike, making you fully liable for any damage and we require an imprint of your credit card as a form of ‘security’ against damage and theft. Please read the small print and make sure you know what you are getting yourself into. We will also have an option for bike insurance.
If you heading to South Africa for the Cape Town Cycle Tour 2020 and intend to stay in the Mother City for the duration of your stay, then yes, you should take your own bike with you. But if you intend to combine the Cape Town Cycle Tour with a safari, a trip to the Winelands, or a self-drive adventure up the Garden Route, it makes sense to rent a bike. It will cost you roughly the same amount to transport your bike to Cape Town as it will to rent a bike in the city, and so financially, it’s the same.
